Clinic Teams with Riley

SOUTH BEND -- Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health is now leasing space at the South Bend Clinic for its traveling specialists.

More than 3,000 children are expected to receive outpatient treatment from Riley doctors this year when they visit the clinic, 211 N. Eddy St., located east of downtown South Bend.

For the past five years, Riley has leased space for its specialists at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center for this regional outreach program.

With the agreement ending over the summer, Riley officials decided to look at other locations.

"We don't want to be aligned with just one (health) system," said Dr. Jeff Sperring, president and chief executive of Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

"Our biggest priority is providing services to all of the kids with families in the northern Indiana community," Sperring said, adding how the location near downtown offered a central location for area families.

Saint Joseph Regional in Mishawaka in July became affiliated with the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis.

"We are privileged to have worked together (with Riley) to provide pediatric specialty care to the region," said Pam Henderson, Saint Joseph Regional vice president of marketing and public relations.

Riley specialists have been traveling to the South Bend area for nearly 20 years, Sperring said. Patient families across northern Indiana often visit the doctors here as opposed to making the drive to Indianapolis.

Riley physicians provide services in cardiology, diabetes, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology and rheumatology within the South Bend Clinic pediatrics department.

Patients schedule appointments through Riley at IU Health in Indianapolis.

"We're simply the location where the family comes to see their doctor," said Matt Romanin, chief operating officer at the South Bend Clinic.

South Bend Clinic officials said they have been talking with Riley for more than a year about the agreement.

"It was easy for us to bring Riley into our (downtown) facility," Romanin said. "We had the space available in our pediatrics department, where they bring their specialists in eight to 10 days a month."

Riley doctors specializing in hematology and oncology are teamed up with Memorial Hospital in South Bend for area treatment.

"Our pediatrics and family medicine doctors have referred patients to some of these doctors for many years," Romanin said. "And their patients can conveniently access our ancillary programs at the clinic."
