September 22, 2015 - These last few weeks, as Dr. Donna Hart has walked into her new office at The South Bend Clinic, the new dermatologist says she has felt very blessed.  She loves dermatology saying she “has ALWAYS been a science nerd at heart” even if she hasn’t always realized it.  Her story is a bit unique in that her career as a dermatologist is her second career!  She graduated from college with a degree in Finance and pursued that career very successfully for several years before she realized something was missing.

“I loved it.  I loved my team.  I just didn’t see myself doing it for years and years.  I just wasn’t satisfied,” Dr. Hart says.   My older sister, who is 12 years my senior, is a doctor, and when I started out, I think I just set out to do my own thing at the time.”

Many realize their true calling after pursuing a different career, but not everyone has the courage to do something about it.   Dr. Hart committed her next several years to starting over.  While working full-time in finance, she poured herself into studying for the MCAT and applied to medical school.  She enrolled at Rush University College of Medicine and went on to become Chief Resident at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in Illinois. She jokes about the many sacrifices she made at an age when her friends were out having fun.   But fast forward to today, and she’s grateful she made the move and especially that she chose dermatology.

“I love the variety,” she says.  “I wanted to develop long-term relationships with my patients.  I find it very rewarding to get to know two or three generations while taking care of an entire family.”  She also enjoys the procedural component of her work and being able to help patients by performing surgeries.

Dr. Hart specializes in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology and is excited to be working with well-respected South Bend Clinic dermatologist, Dr. Holly Harris, who she says she already considers a mentor.  “I love the team here.  I feel like it’s a team I can grow with and learn so much from.”

As she embarks on her new career, Dr. Hart hopes her story serves as an inspiration to others.  “Never let the fear of change or starting over, get in the way of pursuing your dream,” she says.  “If you don’t try it, you will always regret it.”

Dr. Hart will be practicing at The South Bend Clinic downtown on North Eddy Street.
