Cynthia Mayfield, MD joined the South Bend Clinic in 1991 and practices at the Ironwood campus. She is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is a fellow of the American Society for Dermatological Surgery and the Academy of Dermatology. Her focus includes Mohs micrographic surgery and aesthetic closures and cosmetic dermatology.
Cynthia grew up on her family farm in central Illinois and graduated first in her college at the University of Illinois. Her interest in dermatology began in college when she researched acne and adipocytes as two honors projects in college. Melanoma was the topic for her first lecture to classmates at Vanderbilt School of Medicine. After completing medical school and two years of Medicine residency at Vanderbilt, she completed three years of Dermatology residency at the University of Iowa. Her research with a surgeon @ the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden inspired a passion for travel and photography and broadened her view of the practice of medicine internationally.
Cynthia loves the specialty of dermatology which includes training in surgery, dermatopathology, medical dermatology and cosmetic dermatology. The advance of cosmetic dermatology utilizing a combination of lasers, injections, peels, light treatments are of special interest. The core of Dr. Mayfield’s practice is the treatment and prevention of skin cancer including the Mohs` micrographic surgery which she has performed since a dermatology resident at the University of Iowa. Combining over 30 years of experience performing dermatologic surgery with reading frozen section pathology to track skin cancer yields the best cure rates using the Mohs’ technique.
Dr. Mayfield and her staff strive to care for patients as though they are friends or family. It has been a privilege to serve patients in this community for over 30 years.
